Directions
First of all, useful to get
EPFL printable campus map. Our group (EPFL interactive campus map: Office ME D2 1126) is on the second floor of the MED building, on the west wing - follow signs for THEOS and NCCR MARVEL. You can enter the building most easily from the south side that faces the Rolex Learning Center.
Driving directions: If you are driving to EPFL you should park in the paying parking lot underneath the Esplanade (see here for Google Maps directions) or the one underneath the Rolex Learning Center (see here for Google Maps directions). Both are labeled "P" on EPFL printable campus map. Then, walk to our offices (EPFL interactive campus map: Office ME D2 1126) .
By metro: There are two Metro lines in Lausanne - M1 from Lausanne Flon to Renens, and M2 from Ouchy to Croisettes (sometimes with shorter services that end at the train station Lausanne Gare). EPFL
is on the M1 line, close to Renens (metro stop is EPFL). If you are coming from the train station, you take the M2 line in the direction of Croisettes (1 stop, going north/uphill), and get down at Lausanne Flon (the metro station of Lausanne Gare is outside the train station, on the north/city center side, across the street, and in between a MacDonalds and a Starbucks - sic transit gloria mundi). At Lausanne Flon you take the M2 line in the direction Renens, and get down at the EPFL metro stop (if by any chance you are visiting CECAM instead, it is easier to get down at the previous stop Unil-Sorge). You can find here the timetables for the two metro lines (and also maps and timetables for buses).
By train: Lausanne is well served with trains from Geneva, Paris, Zurich, Basel, and Milan, to mention a few. From Geneva airport there are fast trains and somewhat slower trains. If you are on one of the latter, and it stops in Renens, it might be worth getting down there and taking the metro line M1 in direction Lausanne Flon - it's only 5 stops to EPFL. On a fast train get down in Lausanne, and use the directions given above. Train timetables (including metro stops - e.g. you can ask to go from EPFL to Geneva Airport) can be found here. EPFL general page on
Directions to EPFL has a nice sketch of the timelines for the different options.
By plane: the closest airport is GVA, on the outskirts Geneva - there are frequent trains directly from the airport to Lausanne, from where you can take the metro or a taxi to EPFL. Train journey between 42 minutes and 1 hour. ZRH (Zurich Airport) has also direct trains to Lausanne, and the journey takes ~2 hours and 20 minutes. BSL (Basel Airport) is close to the town, and from Basel it is also a ~2 hour 20 minutes train ride. You can find here all train timetables. Remember also that Easyjet has many flights to all these airports.
By taxis, Uber: Plenty of taxis at airports or at Lausanne train station. A ride to EPFL from the train station is ~35 CHF. Lausanne and all of Switzerland have a legal Uber service.
